They fucking tore me apart

November 20, 2009

In one of my particularly masochistic moods when I thought I was not depressed enough , I decided to sign up for this site iwillfuckingtearyouapart.blogspot.com.

Yes, it does exactly what it promises. They fucking tore me apart. You send your blog and they fucking tear you apart, bring you down to your knees till you swear off the internet. They ripped almost all my post contents, were condescending of my writing style and dismissed my arguments, found my template boring and my posts rambling.

Funnily it didn’t offend me as much in the first instance.I mean, I am the little girl who when she asked her mother why all her passport size photographs look so funny was told by her mother ” your photos will look the way you look!!!”.And a month back her very good friend told her ” You are cute in your own way” WTF.

You see, I have my personal put-me-down squad, which not only keeps me firmly grounded, but at times almost makes me wish I could find a hole to bury myself.

Till I went back and re-read this particular line

“She can form a coherent sentence and at least attempts to be grammatically correct. I’m assuming (perhaps wrongly) that English is a second language for her. If I’m right, then that’s pretty impressive. I know a few native speakers of this fine language that can’t do that. But being a good blogger entails a lot more than good grammar and sentence structure.”

Umm, do i sense a bit of (the dreaded R word) here?

I honestly thought the site was run by a group of intelligent AND funny people, not a bunch of clueless  neanderthals ,with antiquated ideas of the world structure and who believe that the brown skin implies less IQ.And whose idea of criticizing someone is to call her “Bitch”-like its a bad thing!!!Read the comments-  they are priceless, almost on par with the rediff ones. All comments were related to my post on tipping and  on feminism. I couldn’t understand some of the comments they left on my earlier post. Oh ,that might be because I am a ‘non-native’ speaker of english.I wish would type out slowly (preferably in caps) . YOU .STOOPID.WRITE.BAD…with the omission of syntax stupid people employ when talking to drunks or deafs or people who simply donot understand their language.

Example of a comment on that blog

“I HATE with a passion people who don’t tip. I think it is cheap and wrong and I would never read this blog or the other creepy Indians blog for that reason alone.”

The saving grace of my blog, according to them?  My travel photographs .And my niece. Of course. Why do you think I am pimping her pictures here. When all else fails put up pictures of cute babies.

My take on the blog : The idea is fantastic. The kind you wish you had come up with in the first place.

Honestly though, they didn’t rip me apart as bad as they could and should have. (maybe they got too bored?).But that one line I quoted kind of put me off the whole thing..You get my point?

AWARDS and HONOURS

I’ve read their post on you, and ooooh I burn! Trust me.

I gave those guys a piece of my mind in the comments section.

This sentence alone shows there’s no hope for them:
“What is the big fucking deal about leaving a 20% tip?”

    And wtf is this?

I’m assuming (perhaps wrongly) that English is a second language for her. If I’m right, then that’s pretty impressive. I know a few native speakers of this fine language that can’t do that.”

The person who wrote this seems to have quite a few ideas in his or her head. Or perhaps that’s the only thing they can try and feel superior about.

did you see the reply to your and Anupa’s replies???

I read the post too and the entire thing comes off as condescending. They seem to have already made up their mind that they weren’t going to like you, no matter what.

I think your biggest mistake however is that you are an Indian blog and they seem quite prepared to look down on anyone for whom English is a “second language”.

Also, I admire your courage in sending in your blog in to be critiqued. I would never have been able to do it, hopefully someday I’ll be able to be that brave.

Are you kidding.Putting others down and getting pulled down-that’s my game baby 🙂
I have seen the way they put down the other blogs,so I knew what I was signing up for.
And as I said, I liked the idea.Butthese lines quoted and the subsequent comments were not quite what I had in mind.

I’ve not read your blog (other than this post — but will take a look shortly).

I don’t want to seem to jump to the defence of the AAYSR review because I do not know if it holds any merit (since I haven’t read your blog yet). However, I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that the statement about English as a second language originates from racism. I love Spanish. I used to speak, read and write it well enough — but not nearly well enough to have a blog written entirely in Spanish. If I wrote something in Spanish, and someone made the same comment about my Spanish writing, I would take it as a compliment.

The generalisations made about Indian bloggers on AAYSR, however, is more troublesome. Two of my favourite bloggers are from India (Maami and Doing Jalsa and Showing Jilpa).

Anyway, kudos on your balanced reaction to the review. I would be in tears.

Why would you be in tears? 🙂 The way I looked at it was like a Seinfeld or Russell Peters or Eddie Izzard picking you up from an audience and THEN picking ON you rest of the night.Even if you are at the receiving end of it,you would be guaranteed a good laugh.
Obviously, I was way off the mark and the comments ,as you said, are nastier than the actual review itself.

The whole thing with the “oooh she’s Indian and yet she can write well in English” is so pissing off.

Do these people realise that there is a whole world outside their little wells??

Yeah, I told my self that I should just let it go and not be bothered.. But life is boring you see, and I seek something to spice it up! 😉

Now look what you have made me do! I sent in mine too! ha ha!The fallen will laugh the loudest!

While the ‘english is probably her second language’ bit is not racist it is definitely condescending. In a – ooh! the natives! they be writing in english way.
“writing good english for an Indian’ is so not a compliment- simply shows the intenese apu from simpsons and peter sellers stereotyping.

Inglish for the win any day!

Are you fucking kidding me? Half of the American blogs that are submitted to us are reamed for grammar mistakes that a 4th grader wouldn’t make. We’ve also waded through a shit ton of Indonesian and Filipino blogs where things will be going along fine, and then turn indecipherable when random Tagolog or other language phrases are inserted.

Get over yourself. We’ve fucking loved or at least enjoyed numerous blogs from Indian bloggers. We’ve also hated more than a few.

Yours wasn’t even worthy of hatred, it was just dull.

“it was just dull.” : yes, this is the kind of insult I was looking for (albeit in a more ruthless way – in a way that I will never blog again) when I signed up on that site.
Not some pity comments ;Here, don’t feel so bad,you native. Some crumbs of praise for you too!!

I think the name of their website says it all.
They are their to tear you apart..
    NO MATTER WHAT….??
I think they will do the same even with a English Blog..But may be in someother way which may come offensive and increase hits on their blog.
I mean their idea is getting negative publicity.
Because it hurts when you hit below the belt.
They are doing it in a very crude manner.
And are happy because.. People are going there.
I mean blog is a personal expression of your ideas and language is just a mode of communication. If a random blog( without any economic motive) does that, I think it should be considered a way to unleash your thoughts for those who are comfortable reading it, Unless you are pushing it everywhere..

SO DONT GET UPSET… Every one has a assigned a job himself in this world of web.
They have theirs… Just take it in Good spirits.. They are just telling how nasty they can be?

i mean they are there to be offensive and provocative.
        Which can increase their hits.
Thats their way of getting attention.
Your blog is have a subtle humour with some really interesting articles.
Yes you didnt come on web with a business in mind … Thats why you havent assigned a job for yourself as such now.

    @lostonthestreet

I just wrote another post on why I don’t tip.

I think you’ll find it’s even better than the last one 😀

  9. December 1, 2009 4:26 am

” your photos will look the way you look!” yours too? Join the club!! 🙂
As for the comments.. it was not even half funny.. like you said they could have done a much better job and all they could come up with was some condescending comment about Indians and English? Thats it?? Sigh!! I think they are no good at tearing apart are they???:P

yeah not so good at tearing apart.

  10. December 1, 2009 4:29 am

Btw I am amazed at how many people just assume that if you are Indian, knowing English is such a big acheivement.. a friend once asked me “How come Indians speak such good English?” She was from Russia .. and like most countries of the world their education system teaches them in their native language! She was really surprised that we our medium of education and in most cases, communication is English in India! And the second language is our mother tongue.. not sure if that is a good thing! But thats the way it is after all!! 😛

  11. December 1, 2009 4:30 am

Sigh .. and that comment has such poor grammar!! lol!

I don’t know where in the world you got that idea. It is run by people who have are off their medications or who can’t get medication because no one has come up with a remedy for what ails them.
